"A lawyer is either a social engineer or a parasite on society."

-Charles Hamilton Houston

Our Vision

Now more than ever, we recognize there are far too many people who do not have access to justice, who are victims of a criminal justice system badly in need of reform, and a biased civil justice system that favors the interests of government and businesses over the rights of everyday people.

We recognize that those without access to justice are disproportionately poor and people of color, who are far too often dependent on having a capable, committed, and passionate attorney. We recognize that lawyering is not merely how we make a living but is a privilege we have earned that comes along with the obligation to use it to transform our nation into one that treats marginalized individuals and communities with dignity, respect, and honor.

Our Mission

The Barristers Society's mission is to build a movement comprised of legal advocates who possess a consciousness about the racial and economic barriers that impact poor and minority communities and who share a commitment to combatting these obstacles. This community of advocates will be committed to fighting against these barriers in their professional lives, raising awareness of these barriers and the societal benefit of eliminating them, and mobilizing, engaging, and partnering with others outside of the legal community in this effort.
